Personal Belief Statement

My mom is a nurse and always encouraged me to be passionate. I loved nature, and she fed that passion by taking me on camping trips. She was my first educator. She taught me the importance of education before entering the school system just by feeding my interest in knowledge about the world around us.

I was not a model student when I started school, more interested in socializing than the work. I was held back in fourth-grade, and that changed my life for the better. It was not that I was not smart. I just needed someone to grip my interest. My new fourth-grade teacher recognized my struggle; she saw that I needed more than the conventional way of teaching. She approached me after a math class and asked if I could help other students as a tutor. She knew that I could succeed in school, but I needed a reason to do the work. I was intrigued by the challenge, so I said yes. This single act started my love for school!

Not all children will learn the same way or at the same pace. Sometimes, when teaching, you must change up how you relay the information to accommodate the audience/individual (Gardner, 1983). I believe that all children deserve the same privileges, no matter their background, to allow them to succeed, especially when it comes to education. Like my mother and my fourth-grade teacher, I strive to be the teacher that makes a positive difference in her students’ lives!

Personal Belief Statement

“The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science.”

~Albert Einstein, The World As I See It

Ideal Classroom Layout

The classroom layout I developed above supports the learning environment I want to create for my students. I arranged the desks in a way that all my students can engage in the learning experience. I want to be able to teach while interacting with the entire class, so I created enough aisle room to walk around. I am a science teacher, and I want life science in my classroom, hence the plant or animal life area. I hope the school I teach in has lab equipment and fume hood so that we can bring chemistry and experiments into the classroom. I want to implement lab days within our learning process. The activity board is for assignments, duties, and encouragement. The adventure table is for classroom discovery, where I can bring things in based on the interests of the student. I want to create an environment the connects our learning community with the classroom!

Comprehensive Classroom Plan

In my classroom, I want my students to feel loved, supported, and encouraged.  From day one, I will provide an environment that will allow my students to feel important in our learning community and that I respect their funds of knowledge (Nurulazam and Zain, 2018). Not one student has the same perception of the world, influenced by their background (i.e., family, community, culture, life experience). “All the knowledge that students possess as a result of their cultural backgrounds and interactions is referred to as their funds of knowledge” (Basu and Barton, 2007; Nurulazam and Zain, 2018). I know that not every student learns in the same way. I will acknowledge the needs of my students without the influence of my personal bias in the classroom culture. “’Managing’ a classroom well is not about controlling every action my students make but establishing a way for all students to connect with the content in a meaningful way (Kelly and McGlynn, 2018).”

Teacher Toolkit

As an educator, especially in a Covid-19 world with remote learning, it is important to find ways to build relationships with your students and parents. It is also important to make sure everyone stays healthy in mind, body, and spirit. This section will help me bring all my methods and ideas to one place. Please feel free to contact me if you have any suggestions. We are all experiencing these trying and different times together! Why not make it into an opportunity to grow?
